Top 30 Most Anticipated Genre Video Games of 2013

This past year, 2012, was a year of ups and downs in the world of gaming. The ending of the Mass Effect trilogy left a bad taste in many mouths; Portal 2 surpassed the original in every way; Resident Evil 6 was a disappointment to fans of the series; and Halo made its triumphant return despite the naysayers.

However, that is all in the past. It’s time to look towards the future of gaming.

So without further ado, here is a list of the top 30 most anticipated games of 2013:

.

1. The Last of Us
This is my pick for the best game coming out next year. In a post-apocalyptic world in complete anarchy, you need to escort a very special girl to safety; it hasn’t been revealed why yet. It looks to be incredibly intense; I just hope it lives up to the excitement set by its trailers.
Released by Sony on May 7. This title will be available for PlayStation 3. Buy this game from Amazon
2. Remember Me
In a cyberpunk future on the streets of Neo-Paris, you play as a girl with the ability to erase and rewrite other people’s memories. The problem is that this has been done to you too, so now you must discover the truth. It looks very promising, and fresh ideas instead of reboots or sequels are always nice.
Released by Capcom on June 30. This title will be available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Buy this game from Amazon
3. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
The indirect sequel to what is considered one of the most terrifying games ever made, this game is greatly anticipated. Can it follow up after the big success of Amnesia: The Dark Descent?
Released by Frictional Games. This title will be available for PC. A release date has yet to be announced. Buy this game from Amazon
4. Star Wars 1313
Have you ever felt like Star Wars focused too much on the Jedi and not enough on Boba Fett? Then this is a game for you. You play as a bounty hunter in this third person shooter that looks excellent so far.

Released by Electronic Arts on February 19. This title will be available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Buy this game from Amazon
8. Bioshock: Infinite
The first game was amazing and the second a little disappointing. Can this new game, that takes place in a new steampunk city (this one in the clouds instead of under the ocean), pick the series back up? It looks very promising, so here’s hoping.
Released by 2K Games on March 26. This title will be available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Buy this game from Amazon
9. Dead Space 3
Another terrifying series, this newest game introduces co-op game play. Will this feature take away from the fear factor? I doubt it, as there’s a lot in space to frighten, even with a friend at your side.
Released by Electronic Arts on February 5. This title will be available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Buy this game from Amazon
10. The Elder Scrolls Online
This series became popular with the 3rd entry, Morrowind, and has been growing exponentially with both Oblivion and Skyrim. It’s no wonder that it’s becoming an MMO, and fans of the series are dying to get their hands on it.

13. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct
For those who watch the TV show The Walking Dead, I’m willing to bet you’re a fan of Daryl. Are you a fan of shooters? If you fall into both categories, this looks like your ultimate game. You play Daryl in events before the show began.

14. Sacred 3
This series seems to be kind of a cult classic in the gaming world, with those who know it loving it. This game appears to be a a dungeon crawler, a lot like Diablo. Hopefully this game will continue the quality the others have had.

15. Dragon Age III: Inquisition
Most people either loved the original or the sequel, but rarely both. Can the third installment in the series unite fans, or will it just be a big disappointment?

16. God of War: Ascension

17. Pikmin 3
In this well-loved Nintendo series, you play an astronaut who lands on a strange planet. You get the local wildlife to help you find and return the parts to fix your ship. I expect this will be much like the first two in the series.
Released by Nintendo. This title will be available for Nintendo Wii U. A release date has yet to be announced. Buy this game from Amazon
18. Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssee New ‘n’ Tasty
As far as I can tell, this is a remake of the old original Abe’s Oddyssee, which was a quicky little adventure game for the PlayStation and PC. I’m definitely interested in this.
This title will be available for PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and PC. A release date has yet to be announced. Buy this game from Amazon
19. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2
The previous game met some mixed reviews, but Castlevania is a longtime fan favorite. Offering the chance to play as Dracula and fight the Belmonts, can this game bring fans back to the series?

20. Fire Emblem: Awakening
This is one of the oldest strategy roleplaying series out there, predating Final Fantasy: Tactics and even Shining Force. In a series beloved for great storytelling and very difficult gameplay, this new game has already met high scores in Japan. Can it duplicate this in the rest of the world?
Released by Nintendo on February 4. This title will be available for Nintendo 3DS. Buy this game from Amazon

You play as Air Marshall Killian Samuels, who is abducted by a cruel race of aliens and has to fight his way to freedom. I thoroughly enjoyed the first installment and am definitely looking forward to this sequel.
Released by Bethesda. This title will be available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. A release date has yet to be announced. Buy this game from Amazon
23. Plants vs. Zombies 2
The first Plants vs. Zombies is a great, quirky tower defense game where you use plants to defend your lawn against hungry zombies. I’m curious to see what they add to this one.
Released by PopCap in late spring. This title will be available for pretty much all possible platforms. Buy this game from Amazon
24. Tales of Xillia
The Tales games have long been fairly well received. This particular entry has been out in Japan for years, along with its sequel. The rest of the world will finally get it next year. With high scores from Japanese reviewers, this game looks very promising.
Released by Namco. This title will be available for PlayStation 3. A release date has yet to be announced. Buy this game from Amazon
25. Aliens: Colonial Marines
The last few Aliens games have been poorly recieved, but this is from the creators of Borderlands. Can they turn the trend around?

Released by Microsoft. This title will be available for Xbox Live Arcade. A release date has yet to be announced. Buy this game from Amazon
28. Apotheon
A mortal in ancient Greece faces the wrath of Hera and the other Gods after they overthrow Zeus. This sidescroller hack-and-slash game has a lot of potential.
Released by Alientrap. This title will be available for PC. A release date has yet to be announced. Buy this game from Amazon
29. Phantasy Star Online 2
Older Phantasy Star games were fantastic works of art, but recent attempts have been lackluster. Can a new MMO bring the magic back?
Released by Sega. This title will be available for PC. A release date has yet to be announced. Buy this game from Amazon
30. State of Decay
Have you ever looked at an open world game like Grand Theft Auto and said, “This game needs more zombies and a Farmville aspect?” Yeah, neither have I. Apparently someone has, though, and we’ve got this game to show for it. Could be interesting, or it could be terrible.
Released by Undead Labs. This title will be available for Xbox Live Arcade. A release date has yet to be announced. Buy this game from Amazon

.

Honorable Mention: Deadpool (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U; Release date TBA) – A hack-and-slash game with all the humor of Marvel Comics’ Deadpool. What else do you need to know?

There you go. All of these games look to be amazing in their own right. This is by no means a comprehensive list of what comes out next year, and there are many more games that don’t fall into the speculative fantasy category that also look fantastic. It should be a good year for gamers.

  1. The Last of Us and Star Wars 1313 look awesome.

  2. No Dark Souls II, but Lightning returns?

    List is awful.

    Can’t wait for PSO2 though.

http://www.vg247.com/2012/12/15/dark-souls-2-a-direct-sequel-to-first-title-may-not-make-2013/ – It looks unlikely Dark Souls 2 will be released in 2013, hence why it didn’t make the list.

  4. StarCraft tops my list. Wings of Liberty is the first (and still only) RTS game since the original StarCraft of which I actually finished the single player campaign. More than once even.

The Last of Us does look awesome, but unfortunately I’m not getting a PS3 just for that. I’m done with consoles for a while now.

Hadn’t heard of Remember Me before, but it’s high on my list now.

Star Wars 1313: Meh. Never got the whole Boba Fett love thing.

Bioshock was awesome, but the mediocre reviews scared me away from the sequel (though I got in a Steam sale for cheap I think …) I’ll wait for the reviews to come in before deciding on the new one.

The Elder Scrolls Online: I hope this one can fill the MMO shaped hole in my heart that City of Heroes left there, and TOR never really managed to fill.

Dragon Age III I’m steering clear of. Never thought Bioware could really disappoint me, but DAII was monstrous for a number of reasons, but mostly because how unlike DAI it was. Talk about driving away your core audience.

2013 is also the year a lot of games funded by Kickstarter will start seeing the light of day. Like a new godsim by Peter Molyneux: Godus (also on tablets!), Brian Fargo’s Wasteland 2, a new Carmageddon by its original designers and the original and really interesting looking (to me anyway) République (for iPads, but also on PC).
