Ranting Dragon’s Favorite… Superhero!

A superhero is a type of stock character, dedicated to protecting the public. By most definitions, characters strictly require actual superhuman powers to be deemed superheroes. However, this term can be applied to characters who perform the same functions but are devoid of such powers and abilities who are alternately referred to as costumed crime fighters

Tight spandex, super powers, love interests to rescue, and evil villains to battle… Superheroes, we all love them! Of course, like everyone, our team has their favorite vigilantes as well. In no particular order, these are the heroes we root for:

Swamp Thing
By Michelle
Does Swamp Thing count as a superhero? I’m not entirely sure. But does it matter? Not to me. I haven’t read many comics to base this on, but in all those I’ve read, Swamp Thing from DC’s New 52 reboot is by far my favorite character. A nature elemental composed of plant matter with a human core, he can control plant life and regrow when injured, as well as having some power over the elements. He has a connection to the Green (the spirit of the natural world) and must protect the environment and humanity from forces that seek to destroy them. However, the forces of nature can be harsh and merciless. He’s a bit different from more traditional superheroes and that is what I like about him.
Batman
By Dan and Michael
Batman is a superhero who doesn’t cheat. Batman runs alongside Superman, who is completely immortal unless you have a magic rock, and Spiderman, who does waaay more than a spider could—what is Spidey Sense exactly?—along with other similarly supremely powered people. Yet Batman achieves victory through cleverness, planning, and skill, not because he is just outright more powerful than his enemies. While Bruce Wayne’s money certainly helps in terms of generating high quality equipment, you still get the sense, especially after his martial training in the revent Christian Bale reboots, that he’d be doing what he was doing even if he was poor.
Captain America
By Rebecca and Caitrin
All-American superhero and all around good guy Captain America, also known as Steve Rogers, is a true hero. Champion of the weak and defenseless, crusader against bullies of all sizes, he’s also pretty good looking! Not only that, he seems completely unaware of it, which makes him even more charming in his innocent sweetness.
Iron Man
By Ashik and Manon
In the trailer for The Avengers, Captain America sneers at Tony Stark, “Big man in suit armor. Take that away and what are you?” Stark responds, “Genius billionaire playboy philanthropist.” Iron Man is amazing, with or without his suit on.
Spiderman
By Stephan
I was ten years old when I first saw the animated Spiderman series. It was a young boy’s first foray into the world of superheroes, and I fell in love instantly. I started reading what few Spiderman comics were translated to Dutch, and when the first film adaption came out, I saw it a million times. I have since fallen in love with other heroes, like Iron Man, Superman, and Batman, but my love for Spiderman will always remain, despite the fact that he’s recently been transformed into some annoying emo kid. I can’t wait for the reboot!
