Spellbound (Spellwright #2) by Blake Charlton

Postby James » Wed Sep 14, 2011 11:49 am

So, I really, really loved this book. As I mentioned in the review, it's better than the first - and seriously, how often does that happen with trilogies? Never, that's how often. :P

One thing I did have to ask Blake about was how the gods/goddesses/demons/etc worked. Apparently Cala is the goddess of Avel and the people pray to her, but Celeste is the goddess of all of Spires, so she has more power and can order the canonists around. A minor bit, and probably my own fault for not understanding, but I thought I'd mention it just in case!

So, what'd you think of it?

I just bought both Spellwright and Spellbound today! I'm excited. Now I just have to get through these ARC's so I can read them..

I'm glad to hear this is better than Spellwright (which I did enjoy). I have Spellbound sitting next to me waiting patiently.

I read Spellbound a couple of weeks ago, and loved it. Might be my most entertaining novel read so far this year. I still get confused a few times, the magic narrative is a bit hard to follow at times, and it's quite frequent when I'm wondering who the heck is fighting who, who are allies, who are enemies particularly on a macro scale. It was evident to me more than anything in the last battle, the air portion in particular.

In my review I described it as an "epic fantasy prosepunk", what do you guys think?

Anyways, first post here. Looks like a cool small community, hopefully I'll stick around.

Passages with a lot of "silvery text" or "gold prose" or "threw a Numinous sentence", etc. It gets a bit confusing at times for me. Like, hard to keep straight what's actually a silvery text, or a Numinous sentence. So I much of the time, didn't bother to over think it and kept on reading. Even so, it really doesn't bother your understanding of what is going on pretty much.

Ah, ok. So the magic is just a little difficult to understand if you don't have a literary degree? (that's how James' review formulated it) When you said magic narrative, I totally imagined a viewpoint from the magic. Would've been quite interesting. :P

Well to a degree. It's hard to explain, since in all, it's not really a all that complex, it's just a bit hard to keep terms straight and what they represent. Like you can tell what's happening well enough, and why it's happening, but maybe not the specific details. But I really didn't found it to hinder the reading experience or understanding what is going on magic wise, just would've liked to have had a better grasp on the terms...and I think I'm not alone in this feeling.

You haven't read it right?

Anyways, I really liked the new characters introduced, particularly our new heroine. She was loads of fun, and I thought the dialogue in this book was amazing and Charlton has a great grasp on word play and banter.
