The Emperor's Knife by Mazarkis Williams

Postby Stephan » Mon Sep 05, 2011 8:19 pm

As Mr. Lawrence so kindly pointed out, we are missing an anticipation topic for The Emperor's Knife! Silly of me, I'm so busy enjoying the heck out of it, that I forget to share it with you all!

Well, ho and behold!

Image

Let me tell you, this is one amazing book! It is so good, even, that Mark Lawrence fears for his position as best debut of 2011. And rightly so, unless the ending sucks, it's going to be a very close call.

There is a cancer at the heart of the mighty Cerani Empire: a plague that attacks young and old, rich and poor alike, marking each victim with a fragment of a greater pattern. Anyone showing the marks is put to death. That is Emperor Beyon's law . . .

But now the pattern is reaching closer to the palace than ever before. In a hidden room, a forgotten prince has grown from child to man, and as the empire sickens, Sarmin, the emperor’s only surviving brother, is remembered. He awaits the bride his mother has chosen: a chieftain’s daughter from the northern plains.

Mesema travels from her homeland, an offering for the empire’s favour. She is a Windreader, used to riding free across the grasslands, not posing and primping in rare silks. She finds the Imperial Court’s protocols stifling, but she doesn’t take long to realise the politicking and intrigues are not a game, but deadly earnest.

Eyul is burdened both by years and by the horrors he has carried out in service to the throne. At his emperor’s command he bears the emperor’s Knife to the desert in search of a cure for the pattern-markings.

As long-planned conspiracies boil over into open violence and rebellion, the enemy moves toward victory. Now only three people stand in his way: a lost prince, a world-weary killer, and a young girl from the steppes who once saw a path through a pattern, among the waving grasses.

Mazarkis Williams pieces together a complex mosaic of personality and ambition in a brilliant work of magic and mystery set in a richly imagined world, the first book in a fantastic new series.

The Emperor's Knife is released in the US in December by Night Shade Books, and in the UK in October by Jo Fletcher books, a new dedicated publisher of SFF, that has already stolen my heart with this first release. Check out an interview with Jo Fletcher, the woman behind Jo Fletcher (figures, eh?) here.

Anyone else anticipating it?

I'm anticipating finding the time to start reading it - it sounds like it's going to be right up my alley.

I've got this already, and looking forward to getting it read and reviewed. (Thanks to Mark Lawrence for letting me know about it in the first place.)
Incidentally, I've also got an interview with Mazarkis ready to go up on my blog (Civilian-Reader) on September 21st!

Oh hey, love your blog! Welcome! 8)

An interview sounds like a great idea. I look forward to reading it. Also really interested in your thoughts. I'm currently reading it as well. I'm only half-way through, but my mind has already been blown. :w00t:

Hmm I checked the Australian bookseller site that tells me what is available and as of yet it doesn't look like it's published in Australia. But as I want it sooner rather than later I'll need the hardcover and sometimes books I buy online arrive slightly damaged..

I should also probably read it if it's contending for the best of 2011.

Oh the humanity! (First world problem).

Fingers crossed that Goldsboro does a signed version. I've been really happy with them. Prices are decent if you get the books at release too (obviously not Amazon good, but I payed $35ish AUD for a signed Prince of Thorns, including postage)

There's still a small part of my mind that would prefer I meet the authors in person and get them to sign it for me. Unfortunately that would require a plain trip so I might use this. :P

Personalized = keep forever. Signed/numbered = investment, and buy another copy to get personalized if you get a chance to meet the author.

I'm just about 60% done with this. It's quite good, but still waiting for the pace to really pick up. Should have a review up Friday afternoon.

You know, I am probably more jealous than she is... Night Shade Books requested I hold back the review until early November. Grumble! (nana)

With JoFletcher putting out in the UK in 3 weeks I figured might as well put it up ;) We'll see if I get a scolding e-mail from Liz.

Surprisingly the US version came out in Kindle today. I think maybe Jo Fletcher bought all the eBook rights and Night Shade only bought physical US rights. Possible?
