Anime Fans?

Postby Bob Loblaw » Thu Oct 20, 2011 6:20 am

Gotta be some anime fans around, right? Especially since so much for it falls under sci-fi/fantasy.

So what's everyone's favorites? I've always thought about 90-95% of anime is rubbish, yet that last bit is completely worth sifting though the rest (kinda like fantasy books).

I've yet to see any Miyazaki that I didn't like. Most of his stuff puts me in a sense of wonder I haven't felt since a little kid.

If anyone out there doesn't think anime is for them, I'd challenge you to at least try watching some. There's some really good stuff out there that you're missing out on.

My favourites (in order):

Avatar: The Last Airbender (not sure if this counts as anime)
Eureka 7
Mushi-shi
Soul Eater
The Big O
Dragon Ball: Z & GT
Samurai Champloo

I don't really watch anime any more. My friend has moved into subs but I'm not as into as him so I don't need that. He says there is a dearth of good anime out there right now; well, at least for dubs anyway.

I don't watch anime much, but Miyazaki is just awesome! (L) Haven't seen all he's done, but I have a feeling nothing can beat Porco Rosso!

...I also spent a summer watching Ouran High School Host Club. Come on, it's funny!
Space permitting.

Yeah, that's always kind of been the problem to me. The only way I'll ever do anime is if I get friend recommendations. I totally agree with you there's some that's utterly awesome, but I'm not willing to sift through that much crap to find the good stuff on my own. I agree somewhat that this is similar to fantasy, but either "average" fantasy isn't as bad as "average" anime, or I just like the average fantasy more.

I always liked the Vampire Hunter D stuff. It's been so long since I watched much anime I don't remember what else at the moment. Oh wait, I recall liking Princess Mononoke. That's another.

Yeah, Mononoke is another by Miyazki.

A friend forwarded me this awhile ago. Big picture with a lot of worthwhile anime. I've been chipping away at it for sometime.

It introduced me to Kaiba, Kemonozume, and Baccano so far (as well as having a lot of other stuff I've liked on it) so it's worth taking a look at.

Cowboy Bebop is worth it for the soundtrack alone.

Used to be a huge anime fan, but 2 or 3 years ago found myself without time to watch anymore. Some of my favorites, in no particular order:

Seirei no Moribito
Twelve Kingdoms
Monster
One Piece
Samurai Champloo
Utawarerumono
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Ergo Proxy
Infinite Ryvius
Saikano: She, the Ultimate Weapon
Full Metal Panic
Fullmetal Alchemist
Elfen Lied
Code Geass
Texhnolyze
Condor Hero
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Hunter X Hunter
Berserk
Project ARMS
Hellsing Ultimate
Samurai 7
Hoshi no Koe
Black Lagoon
Kurau Phantom Memory
Shingetsutan Tsukihime
Rurouni Kenshin
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka
Kaiba
Hajime no Ippo
Baccano!!
Last Exile
Scrapped Princess
Death Note
Psalms of Planets: Eureka seveN
Gun Grave
Juuousei: Planet of the Beast King
Rahxephon
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Blue Gender
Planetes

Got plenty more I think, but that will have to do since I don't have a list to refer to. But should be some good stuff in there for you guys to try out depending on your tastes. And it seems like I got a bit carried away, guess I miss talking anime a bit.

But overall, I've started to find anime disappointing, particularly with adaptations a poor endings. I had started to follow mangas more than anime, they were simply better overall and more satisfying.

Anything you'd recommend to someone who doesn't watch anime, but wants to start? I've only seen Death Note from your list.

Always a tricky question that one. For starters know that I've always been adamant of watching anime with Japanese audio and English subs (or whatever subs you prefer). I think dubs take away from them, though there are some that are good, but I think it's rare to find a good dub. But just me.

You mention Death Note, maybe you'd like to try Monster which overall has the best story, but it's more drama/mystery oriented, and certainly requires some patience to let things develop.

The Ruruoni Kenshin prequel, Samurai X OVA: Trust & Betrayal is very beautifully done, four episodes long so that'd be a good place to start too.

For fantasy lovers, which I guess most of us here are, I'd recommend Seirei no Moribito & The Twelve Kingdoms. Seire has one of the most beautiful action scenes out there, The Twelve Kingdoms is just awesome I think, though too bad the story never got finished, still worth watching I think.

Then there's Berserk. Actually go with Berserk, and after you're done with that do yourself a favor and read the Berserk manga from the beginning. The anime adapts volumes 3-13 or so, with some small changes. But it has some disturbing graphic scenes (the manga at least), so you've been warned.

My favourites are all the Miyazaki ones, xxxholic, Tsubasa, Death Note, Spice and Wolf. I can't remember the others right now.

I actually prefer reading the manga most of the time.
I have a whole bookshelf full of that although I haven't bought any in a long time. :)

Yes, that season of FMP was hilarious. I hope more of the series gets animated.

@Stephan, let me know how that goes. I haven't read the manga, as I understand it, one of the best and faithful adaptations, so that's always a plus for me.

Yeah, Berserk is good stuff.

Will have to check out more of what you listed.
