Write now - June 6 prompts

Postby Rebecca » Mon Jun 06, 2011 10:09 am

I am organizing Write now, a writing group on another forum (if you're curious, there's more details here) and I thought it'd be fun to mirror the writing prompts over here as well in case anyone wanted to write with me. I'll post what I write once it's done.

Winterdawn Lor'ee wrote:This week's two writing prompts.

Take the results of a random generator and write a story from it. Seventh Sanctum has several generators that could be used under the Story Inspiration section; Serendipity has a Fantasy Plotter; or feel free to use your own favorite random generator. (Don't forget to share the results from the generator along with your story! :))

Is there a difference between a writer and an author? What is the difference? Write a paragraph or more discussing this.

Do either, do both, or write your own thing. Write now. :D

I started; I never finished.

Winterdawn Lor'ee wrote:My incomplete story. I spent too much time planning it that I didn't have time to write it out. :lol

From the Story Generator: This is a tale about sacrifice. The story is about a policeman, a vocal musician, an innocent cab driver, and a forceful nuclear engineer. It starts in Amsterdam. The story ends with a compromise. The gap between the rich and the poor nations plays a major role in this story.
I decided not to include the second generator results because it would have been too convoluted to fit it all in.
Characters:
Diantha Debra Prinsen - rich singer, leaving Amsterdam as the story opens after performing at Melkweg and visiting her Opa and Oma (grandpa and grandma) (“vocal musician”)
Roy Cobus Prinsen - rich PhD student in the nuclear engineering program at the University of Utah (“forceful nuclear engineer”)
Shane Davison - cop from Boston, moved to Utah for his wife LaNova; when they divorced, he stayed in Utah so he could see his kids (“policeman”)
Tye Meadows - poor cabbie who drives Diantha from the Salt Lake airport to her brother Roy’s home in Cottonwood Heights; Officer Davison arrests him because the cops think he’s laundering counterfeit money, when the counterfeiter is really his boss Benjamin Finley (“innocent cab driver”)

Diantha Prinsen’s two performances at Melkweg were surprisingly successful; Friday night sold out completely, and Saturday was almost as crowded. The extra week she stayed to visit her Oma and Opa was the most relaxing time she’d had in a year, since her last visit to Amsterdam, in fact. She would gladly have stayed with them another month or more if she thought her brother Roy could be left to his own devices that long.

She pulled out her laptop as she sat in the Schipol airport, waiting for her flight, and emailed Roy to remind him of her arrival time. When she stopped in Chicago for an hour-long layover, she saw that Roy had emailed her just a few minutes ago. “Diantha, I can’t pick you up from the airport as planned,” she read with a sigh. “Please make other arrangements.”

So it was that when she arrived in Salt Lake City, she looked for a cab after getting her suitcase. The driver, surprisingly, hopped out and put her suitcase in the trunk himself, then introduced himself with a firm handshake, “Tye Meadows,” and opened her door before he got back in and asked for the address to put in his GPS.

They chatted the entire way to Roy’s house, what should have been a twenty minute drive. With construction on the road, it took almost forty.
